Accepting a Sicknote.com certificate?
Here is what you need to know about the legal status of our certificates, how they are issued, and what verification confirms.
Are online sick certificates legally valid in Ireland?
Yes. Irish employment law and the Department of Social Protection do not require a sick certificate to be issued following an in-person examination. What matters is that the certificate is issued by a registered medical practitioner who has conducted an assessment of the patient’s condition.
Our doctors are fully registered with the Irish Medical Council (IMC) and conduct structured online clinical assessments before issuing any certificate. The certificate wording reflects this: it states “I have assessed” (not “I have examined”), which is the correct and legally appropriate language for a remote consultation.
Our sick certificates are accepted by employers across Ireland for absence management and can also be used to support Illness Benefit claims with the Department of Social Protection, subject to DSP requirements.

IMC registered doctors
All Irish certificates are signed by doctors registered with the Irish Medical Council. Licence numbers are printed on every certificate.
Tamper-proof
Reference numbers are cryptographically generated. Any modification to the certificate invalidates the reference in our system.
GDPR compliant
This tool confirms certificate validity only. Full patient details are never disclosed publicly — they appear on the certificate itself.
Do I have to accept an online sick certificate?
Irish law does not specify that a certificate must come from a GP who examined the patient in person. Employers may set their own absence policies, but many already accept telehealth certificates routinely. Our certificates are issued by IMC-registered doctors following a clinical assessment, which meets the standard definition of a medical certificate under Irish employment law.
Why does the certificate say “I have assessed” rather than “I have examined”?
This is deliberate and correct. “Examined” implies a physical examination took place. “Assessed” accurately reflects that the doctor reviewed the patient’s clinical history, symptoms, and circumstances through an online consultation — which is exactly what happened. This wording is standard practice in telehealth and is not a shortcoming.
What if verification returns “not found”?
Double-check the reference number against the certificate — it follows the format SN-YYYYMMDD-XXXXXX. If the problem persists, contact us at [email protected] and we will confirm within one business day.
Can I contact the issuing doctor directly?
Queries about a certificate should go through our support team first. We can confirm or clarify details within 24 hours on business days. Direct contact with the doctor is available for clinical queries that cannot be resolved through support.
